Turkey Feet alone

Submitted by Court on 5/16/99. ( )

I am mounting turkey legs on a panel with the tail and beard
in between the two legs. Where do I begin on the legs? How do
I preserve and position them?

Well to begin with cut your feet at the knuckle. Then I like to take a 3/16 drill bit and run it down the center of the leg bone. This gets alot of the marrow out. Fill the hole with borax, by pushing it down with a small wire 16 gauge. I then position the feet the way I want them on the board.Take them off and inject thinned bodo into the feet. This will set them into the shape you want and keep them there. ( this is only one way there are others) To position them I lay them on their side and spread the feet. Hope this helps.

Color?

Will the feet fade in color? Should Court expect to paint them before he attaches to the board? I've never done these either and will be doing some soon. Thanks.

Very seldom do they loose color. But it can happen, if it does I paint them lightly.

Check on the Bird Taxidermy Forum. I think I saw one there about painting turkey feet using fingernail polish. It even gave the brand and color code. Turtle

Fingernail polish... I'm finding out there's no end to what you can use in this profession. Thanks.

you said there were others ways to shape the feet.
Is there one that doesn't require bondo?

We found tracks down by our pond and we know there are wild turkeys
in the forest, but don't know what made the tracks. Can someone send
a picture of a turkey foot? Thanks!
