MINI-FLESHER

Submitted by john g on 5/1/99. ( TENN4958@AOL.COM )

i wasn't sure where to post this. i've done taxodermy for about 6 years now and i'm interested in the mini-flesher. i've never used any flesher before. is this a good product? should i be familiar with a regular flesher before i use this one? i only do about 10 deer heads a year and do all my fleshing by hand, i feel if i get some kind of flesher i can get better results from my mounts. thanks!

I do about the same number of heads a year, and did all my fleshing by hand until purchasing a mini-flesher. Now I've never used a big fleshing machine so I can't compare to that, but I can say the mini-flesher beats the heck out of doing them by hand. So for what it's worth,I'm very pleased with mine.

Paul

Don't go there!

John,
If you haven't wasted the money yet, don't bother. Mini fleshers are a waste of time and money. Sure, they beat the crap out of a fleshing knife, but they NEVER, EVER shave the hides as you might think they were intended. The cut waves in the hide and leave a saw-tooth appearance.
If you intend to stay in this business for the long haul, invest your hard earned cash in a fleshing machine. (And I would warn you about buying the cheap models. I bought a mini-flesher, a cheap fleshing wheel, and finally a fur dressing wheel. I've spent nearly $3000 on fleshing equipment and discarded almost 2/3 of it. I should have spent the $1200 for the good flesher in the first place. My work would have been years ahead of what it is now.)
