ben I just started out myself....I`ve ordered books, videos and spend a lot of time here reading and asking questions....There is enough information right here to get ya started but the videos will give ya a good jump too...check out "mounting a whitetail deer from A to Z with sallie dames" in your WASCO catalog. If ya don`t have one call the toll free number and order ya one...good luck to ya...

Ben, welcome to the forum. I like you and Travis am a beginner. I started out with 3 deer mounting videos. But, as I've read hundreds of postings here in the forum, I have learned that there are more ways to mount a deer head than you can shake a stick at. The basics are the same in all methods however. Skin, flesh, salt. pickle, shave, tan, and mount. There are various methods for each step. That's the fun part (or frustrating) trying to decide which method is the "best" one to use. Look around the forum like Travis stated, and you will gain a wealth of knowledge. Don't just stay in the beginners menu. Look at all of them.
You did not mention what type taxidermy you wanted to do. A lot of guys do a little of it all. Fish, birds, mammals, deer, exotics, etc. WASCO Supply has a very good beginners course that consists of 7 booklets that give you apretty broad range of info. Cost is around $20. These booklets will give you a better idea what taxidermy is all about without spending a lot of money. As a matter of fact, you might be able to order them thru this web sight. Check it out. There are also scads of other suppliers listed here also. Call several and ask for their catalogs. Most are free, and you can also pick up a lot of info from the catalogs also. There is a veritable wealth of information right here on this web sight.
And remember ben, the only dumb question is the one that is never asked. Good luck and hope to see on the forum again soon. Turtle

hay Ben, You should try to talk to an expert. Nothing Beats hands on experience. I am also a beginner. I have learned alot from the taxidermists in the area. They can teach you many things that books and videos can't even come close to doing. Call a taxidermist in the area that you feel comfortable with. You might even be able to mount one with him or her for more knowledge to you. Cody
