We are working on mounting squirrels as part of a class project. The mold we bought is for a gray squirrel, but the squirrel we shot is a red squirrel, so the mold is much too big. What is the best material/strategy for building a mold which will fit our squirrel?

Dear Students,
If you contact WASCO (you can contact them by clicking on their name here), you will find a product called the Lockit-Socket Squirrel Mannikins. They were sculpted by me, and include full mannikins for a red squirrel in both sitting and standing poses. The bodies can be ordered with or without legs.
I designed these mannikins to allow you to put a squirrel together easily, as well as accurately!
After applying hide paste to them, the flexible legs are worked into the leg-skins, then the mannikin is worked into place. The arms and legs are then epoxied (Devcon "2-Ton" Epoxy) into place, the skin sewn closed, and final adjusting of the skin, finishes the mounting steps.
I also did a VERY complete and IN-DEPTH video on the topic of squirrel mounting that will also be of great help to you. It shows work on a gray squirrel, but the procedures can be used with a red squirrel as well. Contact WASCO and give these products a try. They really work. Good luck to you all. John B.
