First Bird Attempt

Submitted by Ryan on 11/3/1998. ( brink@uswest.com )

First off, I a looking to get into taxidermy only as a hobby, something too keep myself occupied but is yet enjoyable.
I am looking to attempt my first bird mount. I have a nice mallard drake that I want to begin with. I would also like to attempt a pheasant in the future.

I am looking for recommendations on videos or books to get me on my way. I have seen what is available with the kits from VanDykes and Rineharts. Also have catalogs from WASCO, and McKenzie. Seems to be too many options, between books and videos. Also do I begin with a kit or purchase the body, etc. individually?
Thanks,
Ryan

Hi Ryan , Welcome to the world of taxidermy! If I were just starting out I think I would start with a video tape. Debbie Does Dallas is a good one to start with. JUST KIDDING! WASCO has a good selection of tapes from the very best in the world. My advice to you would be put the mallard in the freezer for a while and start with the pheasant. They're a little less complecated as far as fat removal and degreasing go. Good luck to ya!! Bob c

Ryan. Congrats on getting ready to do your first bird mount. Since I live only 20 minutes from the warehouse of Research Mannikins, I buy alot of stuff dircect from them. I purchase items individually rather than from a kit so I get the exact items I am used to using, such as bird necks etc. Research Mannikins also is willing to help answer any questions you might have over an 800 phone number. Good Luck.
