I've done a fair amount of fish taxidermy, mostly as hobby work, but I've never done a cold water species. Recently I attempted a coho salmon for my brother. I skinned and fleshed it and soaked it in a borax/water solution. However, while the skin was soaking, I found an article in an older Breakthrough magazine that recommended soaking the skin in mineral spirits first-to degrease it. Can I go back and do this step after I soaked it in a Borax solution? And if so, should I resoak it in The Borax after again? Thanks for any suggestions !

Please dont use borax on fish, it just dont work!!!! It will leave grranules under the skin. I have used WASCO's fish tan with great success or use a zinc-sulphate solution, also denatured achohol cut 50% with water works real well for a preservitive, just rinse well before mounting.
But really BORAX does nothing for a mount bugs will get into it, I promise.Hope this helps. John C.
