I have heard a lot of different things about how long a deer cape can stay stored away and salted. Can a cape stay salted for more than 10 days? And under what conditions? When waiting to be pickled I usually store a heavily salted cape in the refrigirator (Did I spell that right?) for a week. Is this OK? What is the max amount of time I have before a cape begins to ruin with the salt? Thanks for any clarification!

Court, if it's cold weather you can keep your cape in salt indefinately. When it warms up is when you will have problems, the retained moisture will cause a condition we refer to as pink mold, at which time you might as well throw the skin away, since most of the hair will fall out. If you are doing your capes up as you are ready to tan them, I would suggest just preping and salting the cape 4 or 5 days before, then shaking the salt off and proceed with your tanning procedure.
