Splitting lips and nose

Submitted by Adam on 11/30/1998.

I have caped out my deer head and fleshed it. I am going to send it to a tannery. However, the tanner said to split the lips and nose.

Could someone please give me a detailed description of how to do this.

Or direct me somewhere for help?

Thanks Adam

Adam, This is a hard thing to put in words, but, here we go. I take it your cape is froze. Thaw out your cape, and invert it. Inside your lips, and nose is flesh. Go back as far twards the back of the lip as you feel thickness. make your incision here, and bgin opening the lip all the way to the lip line, be careful not to cut all the way through. after splitting all the way to the lip line, flesh this section also. The same way with nose, go as far back on the nostril as you feel thicknessand begin opening this. Same fleshing. Hope mthis helped. Oh yeah!!!! Bill!!!!! How did I do?

Adam, Bo gave you a good description. Dont take this the wrong way but you guys have got to get into the habit of checking other postings for your answers, this gets too repititious, and its hard to take the time to answer these sometimes as it is. I know for a fact that we've covered these in this heading for beginners, because I remember writing the answers. Go ahead and scroll WAY back and you'll see. Actually, if you have some time, they're kinda fun to read. Nowadays its so easy to get info that used to be dark secrets that the guys just didnt share, so go ahead and work for these a bit. They're there. OK ? Let me know what you think after reading some"oldies". Bill.

Hey Adam, This is one of those things thats easier to show than to write about. But I'll give it a try. Basicly what you have to do is lay open the lips .You must open them up to where the hair and lip line meet. The nose is done sort of the same way .Each nostril has to be split and all the heavy meat removed.I use an old table leg ,insert it from the hair side and this gives you something to cut against. After you remove the meat salt well and let the skin drain for a day. Then shake the salt off and resalt and let dry. Then off to the tannery.Boy I hope you understand this.If you dont let me know and I'll see if I can explain it any better. If you want you can give me a call 607-648-2697 and I can explain it to you over the phone.
