I have a 1/2 lifesize boar cape that I am prep ing for comercial tanning, I have turned the lips, ears, legs, and nose but I am a little lost when it comes to the Cartlage body armor on the ribcage area. It is completly fleshed and I have tried to remove the fat/cartlage that is on the skin but it seems like I am cutting too deep ( I can see the roots of the hair). What is the normal prep on a hide such as this?

Derek, Oh boy are you gonna have fun!! The plate should be removed.I use a fleshing beam to do this "fun" job.Its alot of work .Rick Carter accually skins the plate off.I haven't tried to do that yet.But the next one I do I'm going to try it.I think the "hair roots that your seeing are accually oil glands. They kinda look like roots but they're not.Since your sending this one out to be tanned, I would try to get the skin down to some where around 1/8 of an inch. You have to get the skin thinned for proper salt penetration. Good luck to ya, and have fun!!! Bob C

try to skin the skin off the grizzle/fat instead of the usual other way around. The skin is thinner then the plate thats removed.
