I didnt know where to post this Ques,so i guess this will do. I resently did a elk euro. mount for a customer. I boiled it in salt and sal soda to get the rotten meat off. Then soaked it in 40 vol. peroxide and water and a small amount of powdered bleach. It came out Great except for that &^%^$%%$$#@@$@!@$%^%@!!!! stinky smell. Here the BIG question. How the &^%%$^%##$#$ DO I GET RID OF IT???? Thanks for your help in advance. MARCEL

Marcel, Was it rotten when you got it? Bill... would'nt a good sun soak do it some good? Possibly a week or two?

Why salt?? Boil it in tide or fab and bleach. John C

boiling doesnt remove rotten meat, or the odor. Did you clean the sinus? I wrote about this in a posting a couple of months ago and described the power wash idea. You still have to physically remove the meat and membranes after boiling. Yeah, Bo, the skull does need to air out, but you have to get rid of whats rancid. Thats another reason why I grind the stuff off the skulls, too. Be careful what you guys use for bleaching skulls, more isnt better, it can ruin the natural finish or patina.

And Hey!!!!! Patina, is a good thing!
It all depends on what condition the skull was in when you got it, but, usualy the smell goes away, try just letting it air out. If not try soaking and washing it throuroughly with soapy water.
