Intimidating Mammals

Submitted by Jim Angott on 12/22/1998. ( )

Why am I so intimidated about trying to mount a squirrel or some type of mammals, I love to work on waterfowl and I'm just starting to do some upland game birds. I love taxidermy, but the splittin lips, hide paste, ear liner stuff scares the heck out of me, it seems like a ton of work. I read the message below about the birds to deer question, is there anything I should do to spark interest.

start out with hairy birds, then the transition would seem less scary. When I saw the title I thought you meant one of us guys!

Jim (I feel your pain) I love to do birds and everytime I get one finished it just makes me want to do another one. I really want to expand to doing deer and mammal mounts but they intimidate me also. Most of the taxidermist from my area told me after seeing some of my work on birds they would be a piece of cake. Well I dont know about that but I think it has t just be like doing birds you have to give it a whirl and make the first couple of them look should we say interesting and figure out the tricks frm there. If yu go for it and find some tricks or good informational vidoes do me a favor and pass them on would ya. Good luck I hope they turn out great.

hey you two bird brains

just kidding, but I'm not sure what you guys are after. Theres no "secret" to mammals, they ARE easier. Birds need feather tracking, careful stacking and overlapping. You just backbrush and comb mammal hair. There are a gizillion forms for mammals and heads. Dont worry about videos and that stuff, just go and actually put some together. If all you ever did with birds is pre fab necks, bodies, heads, pre set eyes, etc, yeah, you might have trouble. If you have figured out how to recreate and put back together birds, mammals will go together nice. You know, someone was asking how to do giant canada necks because they couldnt find a manufactured neck. What the hell, MAKE one! Just use flexible foam tube or "neck material" one large and add a smaller one to the bottom for the windpipe. Very simple if we just think things through. Thats what so much of this is, no brain splitting questions, just stop and think stuff. So, you two guys, get out a mammal and get started and have a ball. Put it together with the same knowledge you use for the birds, but just do it, and have fun, OK? And let us guys know how it went.
