Beginner seeks help in Florida Keys

Submitted by Salina K on 12/30/1998. ( skalnins@hotmail.com )

I'm a biological illustrator and I'm crazy about taxidermy. The only problem is my location. Down here in the Florida Keys, I can't seem to find any help, training, or work in the field. I have searched high and low and unbelievably come up dry. Even the fishing charters don't seem to know anywhere but Miami. With so much fishing everywhere, there would have to be something somewhere down here right? Is anyone familiar with this area that could help me out? Thank you.

Locals arent always your best bet

if you read this forum often you'll see that most beginners do not find much in the way of help from the local taxidermist. Thats the whole point of this forum. Some locals feel that they are going to undermine thier own business or let out "the secret". In all fairness most of the guys dont have the time to help someone fascinated with this art. If you are wanting to learn casually, read the postings on this forum and subscribe to the trade mags. The next step might be to order the supply catologs to receive instructional books and manuals or videos. Training is available by school or private instruction. Hope this gets you started, ask more specific questions and one of us will be glad to direct you from there.

Additional Help

This response submitted by Mark Wilson on 12/31/1998. ( mtw@santel.net )

Bill Yox has given you sound advice. An additional thing that you may consider is joining the National Taxidermists Association (504)-641-4682 and the Florida Taxidermists Association (904)-789-6241. The Florida association has a convention in Kissimmee from February 5-6, 1999. N.T.A. Vice-President Mike Kirkhart lives in Florida and operates New Wave Taxidermy in the Stuart area. Im sure he could give you information on both organizations and possibly put you in touch with someone in your area. He can be reached at his shop, (561)-283-7270. I hope this helps you.
Best wishes, Mark Wilson
