How to get started as a beginner???

Submitted by Dr. Buz Brandes on 12/31/1998. ( b_brandes@yahoo.com )

I've been thinking hard about starting to get into the taxidermy biz. I've tanned a few deer hides in the past and are working on a few new hides at this time. Where in the heck does a beginner start to learn about this stuff? I've collected some supply catalogs from various manufacturers and am thinking about ordering videos from McKenzie Supply. Any info on how to get started would be appreciated.

Help on getting started

This response submitted by Mark Wilson on 12/31/1998. ( mtw@santel.net )

The good news, is that getting started is easy if you use the resources that are available to you. First join the National Taxidermists Association and your state association. Next become active in these associations and learn by talking with quality wildlife artists at the seminars and at the conventions. Subscribe to a quality trade publication such as Breakthrough, and learn to do quality work. If your time and finances allow, you may also wish to enroll in a training program or school. Remember that no matter how you learn taxidermy, your skills will only develop throught practice and self determination to do quality work. I hope that this will be your goal, if it is I wish you well and welcome you to the taxidermy community.
Best Wishes: Mark Wilson
