Why not rabbits

Submitted by Kevin from mo. on 1/31/1999. ( )

Ijust got the catalog and the begginers books and was suprised not to see any rabbits any reason why I think they are beatiful as well as some of the other animals I've seen on this site, and no mold's in the WASCO catalog. Thanks for any and all comments.

Kevin I'm just a beginner my self I'm just starting my first mount but in all my reading I've obtaned some catolegs an they have several molds for rabbits. All the books I have been given are from [a supply company]'s Taxidermy supply

Kevin, The reason you dont see many rabbit forms out there is that they are not mounted ofen. The sculpters try to sculpt forms that the supply companies can sell a quanity of.Also rabbits are a pain in the posterior. Their skin is like wet tissue paper. If you breath on them to hard they rip. Any body that can mount a good rabbit is one hell of a good taxidermist. Hares on the other hand, like the snowshoe, are not as bad but close. McKenzie Supply has some of the nicest snowshoe hare forms out there. Bob C PS: Chris the reason the supply company name you mentioned is not in print is because of the unethical things the owner did in the past. You can read more about it under Taxidermy Industry.I believe it was in a post that read "Lets not get a fight started"

Kevin,

You can find some in Van Dyke's. They have a selection of rabbit forms. Cotton tail, snow shoe. I think they price around $20.

Research Mannikins carry Jackrabbit and Cottontail forms, price about $15.00. I am a rabbit breeder (show rabbits) and have tanned more hide than I can count. The skin is thin but after skinning several hundred it gets easy. I am currently mounting a Mini-Lop rabbit. I clean and build up the original skull because they have a bigger head than a Jack,Cotton or Snow. The bodies are build ups, because they are alot rounder than a wild rabbit. Maybe I should develop domestic rabbit molds for a supplier!!!
