Best Airbrush??

Submitted by Jeff on 2/22/1999. ( )

Whats the best airbrush for detailed fish painting(ie Trout spots/verm). I'm using a Badger Cresendo 175 and having a lot of trouble with brush clogging or spattering paint all over the fish. I cant seem to contol the flow at all! I'vw tried thinning the paints, adjusting the airpressure and nothing seems to work. I think its the airbrush. Any comments would help. Thanks!
P.S. I'm using a 1hp compressor without a moisture trap

Omni 6000

The Omni 6000 by Thayer& Chandler (800-548-9307), is the best detail airbrush I've ever used. I bought one at world show in 97 and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Remember, when your doing fine detail work it's a good idea to thin paint with some retarder, which will keep paint from clogging up your tip which will cause some spitting or spattering of paint.

See Ya! Paul

Ommi is good but can difficult for a beginner to use. I used Pashe and not as well as I thought they would be. Then I read an artical about Aztec air brushes and found them to be very user freindly. You can drop them and not have to worry about your neddle tip bending. You can spray the finiest dot to a wide range of witdths. There are many high quality air brushes out there. But the Aztec seams to be the easist for the beginner to use and get a high quality paint job.I painted fish for years and found out that aztec gave me exatlly what I wanted. But remember you are the judge, what works for me or the next person may not work for you. Good Luck.

Aztek air brushes

Frank, or whoever else wants to submit their opinion: I have used a single action Pasche for years and am reasonalbly satisfied with the results. I read and heard a lot about Aztec brushes. I considering trying one. I never been able to master a double action brush. I've gotten used to a single action and the "old dog/new trick" syndrome seems to prevail. My question: If I was to buy an Aztec unit, would you recommend a single action or double action and why?? Thanks, Bob P. in Nebr.

I know of three good fish taxidermists who purchased aztek airbrushes and none are being used today. Draw your own conclusion.

I would advise on a double action. The reason being it can be set as a single action and still be used as a double just by pulling the trigger back. If you read on the Aztec it's about paint not sticking to needle as much as pashe or any other one, even if one is using a retarder or not. I very seldom thin my paint or use a retarder. If anything, there are 4 different type of tips for the brush. Grey seams to be the best all around tip to use. But remember it still takes time and pratice to use any kind of air brush to achive quality.

Aztek brushes

I purchased an Aztek double action airbrush 2 years ago for primarily detail work and I love mine. I use a Paasche H brush for most of my painting and the Aztek for small fish and details. I had never experienced trouble free operation on dot patterns until I used the Aztek. I also use 1 or 2 drops flow aid or retarder when doing detail work and I keep a damp Q-tip handy when the paint begins to dry on the tip. If you buy the double action you can clean the tip by opening the material flow all the way and "blasting" and then returning to the preset flow to continue painting dots. I used to hate dots till I bought the Aztek. Good luck
