Mannikin sanding tips

Submitted by leanna on 2/24/1999. ( scardeer@cornernet.com )

First of all, I hate sanding. In the entire field of taxidermy, sanding is the worst for me. So I thought I'd pass along a trick I've learned from a friend. I took my Jim Hall fish flesher (pg. 189 WASCO catalog summer '97) and filed it down to a razor sharp edge on one side, using the paper wheel system on the bench grinder, and it peels the crust off of a mannikin REALLY well. It saves me alot of elbow grease and whining! Any other tips out there for the nasty "S" word?!
happy sanding, leanna

If you are sanding just to remove the slickness off a manikin for better glue adhesion try a can of mannikin prep. This is similar to
3-M adhesive and will stick to anything.Cover the mannikin with this product, let dry and your hidepaste will stick to it without any problem.

Leanna have you tried a stout ruffer. I have the big one and the small one and they work great. I also use them to taxi the skin around, but be careful you can pull hair out with them.

Stout Rougher??

What is a stout rougher, and where can I get one?? I've heard this tool referred to many many times, but when I walk into a hardware store and ask for a stout rougher, the clerk gives me one of those "where in the h___ did this guy come from?" looks. Presently, I use a stiff wire brush and this works pretty well, but it ususally tests out the strength of my Right Guard before I get a form roughed up to my satisfaction. Appreciate any input. Thanks, Bob P. in Nebr.

Stout Ruffer/File Brush

I "think" a strout ruffer and file brush are one and the same?? I purchased a file brush last night and gave it a try. Much, much better and easier than a course wire brush. Did I "think" correctly?? I guess it doesn't make a lot of difference --- if it works, so what. Bob P. in Nebr.
