have a customer whose house was damaged in a fire. so were several of his mounts, the fish aren't a problem but the wooduck is..any info out there on cleaning a wooduck that has soot and smoke damage..it was not burned but is blackened with soot and smells of smoke..can this be cured or killed?

Michael...most homeowners are not aware that their homeowners fire insurance will pay for the replacement and mounting of this duck. Give the client a written estimate to buy a pen raised bird and mount it.You should also mention in the estimate that the original mount has been damaged beyond repair. Have him give this to his insurance adjuster and it should be covered. I do fire restorations and never had one denied.Good luck...JL
vandykes sells a mount cleaning kit that should work for you.
some people also use brake parts cleaner---just spray the bird down, wipe it off, and let it dry (this must be done outside--that stuff is potent)
Michael.....JL is right. Just went through this the end of Jan. with a shop fire. No problems with insurance on replacing any of the damaged mounts or items..Make sure you state that the mount is damaged beyond repair...Good Luck, Kent
