The man that taught me taxidermy used formaldehyde to Preserve the skin of a turkey. However, I do not have access to this chemical. What can I use other than this that will preserve the skin or where can I get formaldehyde or some other equivalent. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. thanks Matt Z.
Matt,
I don't have a clue what you were taught that for, but you need a book or video on mounting turkeys (geese/ducks/gamebirds and of the above). Formaldehyde could be used as an injection fluid but hardly for preserving hides.
Formalin/formaldahye will set the skin and not allow the feathers to ever be moved. In a human corpus it removes most of the water content and causes the corpse to harden, I once enbalmed a gator that lasted 15 years.
