Not for private display

Douglas It is illegal to mount such birds except schools, puplic display museums etc. Its a lot of federal paperwork to get those exceptions.

are these pets

If these are your pets, you may be able to have them mounted. Federal laws may allow this. Call the USFW at (404)679-7049.

Birds that can be legally purchased my be mounted at

may also be mounted. Parakeets, love bird etc are legal to mount under federal laws. Local laws may limit the dispatch of the bird.

Know the law before you give advise....

B. Douglas,

I don't know what planet "marsico and Ricky" are from, but on this planet it is perfectly legal to mount or have mounted the birds you mentioned in your post...

If you can't find anyone to help in your area give us a call in Montana (406) 538-2288 www.birdtaxidermy.com

I dont know how much YOU need to know, to have that kind of attitude. Jim Marsico is a very good taxidermist. He also takes the time to help many folks here. There are many captive reared birds that are legal to have, but not to mount, such as falconers and their birds of prey, as an example. If you had the same credentials or "bedside manner" as Jim M., you might rephrase your post to say, "Sorry Jim M., but you were incorrect, etc..." These posts are how crap starts, whether Jim's answer was accurate or not.

Try a guy in Middletown, thats not too far from where you are at. Call 845-733-1313 and ask Bobby to get Charlie on the phone for you. If he cant, ask him about a referral that they can help you with.

Sorry Jim M. for stepping on your toes.... It wasn't meant to be an attack on you personally...

And to Bill...... Douglas's post is about parakeets and lovebirds.. I don't see where he mentioned anything about captive falcons...

Douglas you could also try Paul Czarnecki in Waterford Pa.. (814) 796 6320

One more thing....

Bill, Tell me how mis-information is helping folks here ?

Pet SHop Critters

This response submitted by Mike on 1/22/02. ( ) 208.59.247.9

I always thought it was OK to mount any critter that you can legally buy in a petshop. Especially if the bird has a band on its leg, as most do these days. Is that not the case? Do captive bred birds , and other bred critters fall under the wild animal catagory? I dont mean stuff like falcons as mentioned in the previous post, but just your regular run of the mill petshop parakeets, lizards , small furry critters and the like.

As far as I know...

This response submitted by Nancy M. on 1/22/02. ( ) 65.102.168.214

Canaries, finches (domestic varieties), parakeets, lovebirds, other hookbills, ringneck doves, domestic pigeons, chickens and other poultry, etc. etc. .... in other words, ANY BIRD that you can buy and keep without a permit, is legal to mount and keep or to sell without a permit.
There are also birds which can be purchased legally, but you must have a permit to sell them. (pen-raised waterfowl and wild doves, cranes, etc.) A federal taxidermy permit is sufficient for selling these if they are mounted. Paperwork should go with them.
In a category by themselves are raptors. They can be legally possesed, but the permittee can't keep them if they die. They are supposed to be returned to the game dept.
There is one situation where I am totally clueless. What about falconers who fly non-native species? I seem to recall from somewhere that sakers and lagers (falcons) are protected internationally, but imported dried skins of the European Buteo buteo (like a drab redtailed hawk) are regularly available for sale.
Are live ones banned? Does anybody know?
Just curious.

Buteo's

This response submitted by Jim on 1/23/02. ( ) 206.127.86.4

Nancy,

You go girl..... Great post.. As far as Buteo's go, there is an importer in Florida that is bringing in "live" Buteo Buteo's and is selling them.. And there is at least one more that is doing the same along with some of the other non-native raptors.. And falconers that fly non-native species still have to dispose of there birds by other means.. Meaning they can't sell them or give them away to anyone.. They can have them mounted for themselves..

Jim,
How does it feel to be a grunt with a big head?

It's interesting to see.....

What happens when you do a search on "crate boy's" IP number: 152.163.189.166

And it's even more interesting to see what passing along correct information does in this forum.....not much has changed has it?

And Bill, you're correct about how Jim should have phrased his response to Jim Marsico, but it seems a bit ironic that your response was just as inflammatory as his was? This is not a defense or accusation against anyone, just an attempt to point of that pouring gas on the fire won't put it out.
