This book is overglorified and overpriced in my opinion. There are line drawings and faded black and white photos. I gave my copy away after I learned the lesson the hard way.

I disagree w/ George. Amazing!

Dang! 'Wish I had known about your giveaway, George. I am still needing to replace my copy that got burned up. Along with all 3 of Bruce Burke's waterfowl books and about a grand's worth of other books and reference. Oh well. A little at a time....
Prarie Wings is not perfect. Like you said, it is in black and white. The photos are mostly mallards, and they are not razor sharp. The line drawings are there to help clarify what the photos leave vague.
Overall though, I think it is the best collection of flying duck reference that is currently available in any one volume.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! (g)

I disagree too.

But like the Emperor's clothes, I see a bareassed old man where you see art. For beginners, I'll stick to my story and say this books a waste.

Try amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.com Look at their used section. I found mine for $10 and it was in mint condition. I also like it.

I tend to agree with everyone, including George to some degree. It depends on what you want the book for. The pics are b & w and line drawings, but it shows every conceivable flying position a duck could ever be in. A few you would never believe unless you saw the photo. There is no such thing as bad reference pics if you can see the position. The book is only $15, but that was 12 years ago. Even if it is $30 +++, it is worth it if you want flying poses for waterfowl - dabblers primarily. Here's the source.

I got mine at a half price book store in Ft worth.. It was obviously just an oddity on the shelf.. but hey.. It was a diamond in the rough for me.. Like duckan said, there is no such thing as bad reference.

I think I paid $7 for mine.
have a great day,
