Hello, I am new to taxidermy and just getting all of my tools and stuff together. I have been reading a bunch on degreasing birds and have seen folks suggesting Dawn as well as the chemicals from the various suppliers. I have ordered some from Van Dykes and McKenzie and will try and see what works best for me, however I was cleaning my BBG grill the last couple of days and have been using orange clean from Wal-Mart. This stuff just melts of the grease as you spray it on. Would this stuff work on birds or will the citric acid damage the feathers. You can get this stuff in a super concentrated bottle for 15 bucks and dilute with water. The one big advatage I see with this would be the pleasant smell, I do not know how the other chemicals smell as I have not recieved them yet. Any thoughts on this.
Thanks,
Scott M

...for this stuff and immediately wondered the same thing. I'm fairly certain that it won't damage the feathers, but I'm not positive. Any body else have any insight?

Tried a commercial product called Citrol. We tried it because we can get it locally in up to five gallon sizes. One gallon cost us $22.00. I think it may be the same stuff. The pH when diluted is around 9.5. We have tried it on some of our personal birds and some greasy trout. Worked fine on the birds but I was not completly satisfied with the results on the trout. I let them soak for about 15 minutes, next time I try it, I am going to let it soak longer.
Good Luck,
Brent
I start by stating that I am just a novice. I tried some industral stregth citus degreeser called Citrus-sol(it comes in 55gal drums). I sprayed it full strength on the fleshed hide, of a snowgoose, let it set for aboat five minutes, then rinsed. The solivent removed all the grease better than any thing I ever tried, plus when the bird was curing, it had a pleasant citrus smell, instead of that flat funcky smell I had grown used to. It did not discolor the feathers and turned out to be one of my better mounts.
