I have done bird taxidermy for about 3 years now, and noticed that some of the pheasant beaks turns to a greyish/black color when it dries. I live in Hawaii, where the humidity level is high. What causes the discoloration? or is there anything I can do to stop the discoloration so I wont need to paint the beak when it dries.

the outer covering of young bird is thinner then the older birds. More transparent and show the dark bone as it dries under it. I have often pulled this outer Sheath off and painted the boney one under it with whie paint. then just reglued the outer sheath back on. You don't even need to paint it back and you can also paint the face before you reinstall and you will not have to worry about overspray.
