Make your own Form?

Submitted by Mike on 07/09/2002. ( ) 64.12.96.202

I just wanted to see how most of the Taxidermist who entered competitons or just in general mounted their Birds (Ducks, Geese, Pheasents etc...) with foam forms that they buy or do they wrap their own bodies or make forms with plaster etc.. I was just thinking that buying forms doesnt really display the true birds form and shape and was wondering what everyone else thinks is the best method.

Carve the Bird Body

Carving your bird bodies in foam is another option. but truthfully I buy the majority of mine. It only take a few minutes to make alterations and anatommical adjustments. We sometimes spend more time and money to do things cheaper, than if we buy them outright.

Wrapping, carving, buying.

I know shops that do all of that. One taxidermist I know carves all of his, from blue Dow board, just takes a few minutes for him to carve them. I have done several that way just to get the hang of it. Over the years I have wrapped many bodies, while I am slower at wrapping do to not doing hundreds of birds, I asure you that many shops still do and they normally sew the details in with twine. These make a great body and allows different positions readily. Commercial bodies are great too. By keeping a varity of sizes on hand you can have one for almost any duck, goose or pheasant that comes into the shop.

Have seen each of these methods use to win awards, so as for quality thats up to you. The type of body has nothing to do with it.

i wrap 90% of my bird bodies i like wrapping especially for competing as it allows me to get exact body measurements and i can make the body in the style pose that i want. not to say you cant with foam of course its whatevers easier and better results for you.
