thought i"d give Epo-Grip a try after all the hoopla a couple weeks ago, soaked a black and a lesser for 20-25 minutes stirred a couple times, used 7 oz. Epo-Grip two gal. of water, it cleaned great but i noticed some fraying or mild feather deterioation or a frayed effect on some of the underside wing feathers and some on the blue wing patch i don"t think it was there before but i could"nt swear to it...the instructions on the bottle are rather vague what i"m wondering is what is the best mix and time frame for greasy ducks, agitation? how much ? and how bout the same for game birds..just an ol guy tryin to learn a few new tricks, sure could use some help...thanks much..

You did it right

After 20 minutes, you're endangering the feathers somewhat, but not to the degree you seemed to have observed. I don't wash upland birds unless absolutely necessary, but it would work the same on them as well. Just don't let them set and forget. The pH is high and can deteriorate your bird and its feathers.

Use a weaker dilution!

Rick,

Use a weaker dilution the next time and cut down the soak time to 15 minutes. The reason that we do not give an exact dilution factor is that not all cleaning jobs are the same. The same is true about the water chemistry, it varies from hard to soft. What you want to find is a dilution factor that just does the job effectively in about 15-20 minutes. Be sure to rinse your bird well after degreasing with fresh water.
