I find that after about a week of drying, feathers on my birds just dont have the brilliance they had when I mounted them. Is that just the facts of life? I get my birds super clean, degrease, tumble, etc. Do all birds fade a bit or is there something I am missing?

You washed all the oils out of the feathers. Take a dust rag with some furnature polish Like Pledge on it and dust your birds as a final clean up. The furnature polish will put back some of the shine that the oils gave it before you washed them out.
