I've seen a lot of scarey messages posted here about getting rid of any hawk or owl that you have due to legalities here in the USA.
I would like to say that my girlfriend has a certificate from her chief that allows her to possess any birds of prey parts, bodies, feathers etc. We always look for road kills and feel "gifted" to find anything. She "honors" the bird by making beautiful prayer feathers / fans etc. To Native Americans, these items hold a special power. Federally recognized tribes are the only ones allowed this permit. None of her work is sold or given to people without proper permits. Items would be typically gifted to tribe members.
She would graciously accept any bird of prey that you might need to dispose of. Even a single feather would be equally appreciated. No bird will be accepted that is shot!
I dont know if there are any laws about sending this sort of material through the mail. Please know that if there are any illegalities involved with what I am asking, then scrap this entire post. You could probably include a copy of her permit in the package if necessary.
She will absolutely provide you with a copy of her certificate and matching ID if necessary. Only birds/parts being donated and given for free will be accepted. She can cover shipping. So if you would rather donate the beauty to a Native American who will find great spiritual value in it, instead of burying it, just let us know.
If anybody has any words that might be of interest, please post them!
Many thanks

I;d better get a new book, they must have changed the laws.
It use to be, Once you acquired the permit they also supplied you the bird.
Talking about in the good ol USA.
Yeah, and you might as well send the squaw some pyote and eagles while you're at it. These drunken bastards can rape and pilage our land, yes OUR LAND....you took it from the polar tribes and we took it from you - and they answer to no one and have no possession limits. I say we stopped too soon and should have driven these redskins into the pacific ocean.
...Most CHIEF'S, gained that title by being wise, something you obviously are not Mr. Runamuck. Additionly, if you were to pick up a book you might find that southern tribes are the decendants of the polar tribes.
Anyway BK, I may be wrong but the way I understand the law's, it would be illegal for me to touch one of the bird's you have mentioned (Raptor's), unless I first had a permit to do so. If I were to send parts anywhere, I would be in violation to do so.
Being part Cherokee and blood brother to the Lenape of the Delmarva, I understand YOUR plight, but....we can't help you on this one. You see, it's illegal for US to possess them even if you can. We can't get them to you without violating the Federal laws. Sorry.
This fellow has written a very coherant and nicely written post as opposed to half of the posts with many misspellings and whatnot, not that a person should be judged on their spelling abilities. Nobody brought any politics to the table but you and I'm hoping it was just a joke to get a razz out of someone. Well, you got it. It's sad to think that someone in today's age of acceptance and tolerance would write such a post, joke or otherwise. I shall waste no more time responding to your idiocy and ignorance.
Peace to you Runamuck.
runnymuck, has a mental problem, but if he would do some research he may learn a thing or two.
Its funny I am auditing a class at our local private college and watched this tonight.
Not to put anyone down but I have a problem with the way natives here in Alaska can hunt. They can hunt waterfowl in the spring , harvest eggs and ducklings no species is out of the picture for them. My problem with this is that they can use shotguns to do it/or do anyway with no hassel because they 'have the right'. I was born in Alaska and raised here- does it give me the right? hell no because I'm white.I don't think it would bother me as much if they had to use their traditional ways...shotguns not being one.On a similar note I am getting married soon and one of the places we wanted get married in was for native marriages only! what the hell would happen if i opened a place you had to be white to get married in -lawsuit faster than my head could spin. Back to hunting Natives show up at our Fred Meyers (kroger) and buy shotgun shells by the case fulls! most natives here in Fairbanks live in houses, drive cars and trucks, and have normal jobs the same as I do....some one please tell me why I can't go out in the spring and mow down waterfowl before they have the chance to breed ?- Even if the state gave out a certain number of permits for 'non- natives'ithis is bull¢rap and the liberal scum have ruined our country. If any of you want to see the real Alaska I encourage you to come see it know while hunting is still legal the damn bunny huggers are gonna ruin it.
Thank you for your responses.
Chief Runnymuck- a prayer of peace is sent your way. I hope you can also find peace inside of yourself before you depart this world.
My post was really written after I read through archived posts about people having owls or hawks and having to "get rid of them". I figured if they already have the bird and are asking questions about it then the "law" has already been violated. Instead of digging a hole for that snowy owl or goshawk (which actually is just as fine as honoring the bird- returning it to the earth)one could pass it along to somebody with a permit or a group of people that will be moved spiritually by it. This was the basis of my post. If I found a Mormon's Bible on the side of the road and it was illegal for -me- to have it, I would still pass it along to somebody who could have it and who finds great/deep spiritual value in it. If one finds a bag of money that fell out of a Brinks truck and picks it up to turn it in, isnt that illegal to pick it up?
I appreciate all of your posts. I just wanted to make sure that everybody understands that I am not asking them to break the law "for a minute" just for me. I was offering another way of disposal. One that for some people might have special meaning. I know a lady right now who would probably cry for days if she were given a snowy owl feather (permits permits permits). Moving other people in an emotional way through random acts of kindness are a beautiful thing.
Wanishi / thank you

Ok first off as a certified card holding tribal member I am torn between pointing out the ignorance that has been displayed here and educating the public on what is what. Believe me I have a few choice words for a few people here but as to not add to the ignorance I will just try and shed a little light on the subject. The Federal Government allows Indians of Federal tribes to have permits for EAGLE ONLY. They will also provide the permit holder with a bird from the Federal Repository in Colorado. However there is currently a 4 year waiting list to obtain said bird. Now NO WHERE is any Indian allowed to possess any part of a Hawk, Owl or any other bird on the Federal Migratory bird list. A letter from the Chief means nothing. The Feds will supply you with the proper permit once your bird has been issued. Yes there is always exceptions to the laws so before any of you Jail house lawyers chime in I am just attempting to hit the high points here not quote chapter and verse. Now that being said ANYONE who picks up one of these birds is in Federal Violation. Indian or not. Now yes you can have salvage permits etc that changes the whole thing but again I am going high level here. This also only deals with the Good Old USA as someone before stated. Canada, Mexico etc all have different laws. Now, I am a competition dancer at Pow Wows and I have seen someone from the US Fish and Wildlife people at every one. I have NEVER seen them bother any of us for having these feathers UNLESS the person who has them was trying to sell them. That being said ....is it Legal? NO .......but if you are Indian and doing the respectful thing they will leave you alone. Now that is the law and that is how it works. Not one of you can challenge me on that because I live that way and deal with the Feds every week. We know it is Illegal and they know it is Illegal but they won't bother us if we are not selling these items. I am speaking about everything other than Eagle as the Eagle is the ONLY bird permits are issued on to Indians. Now I respect the fact that this person did ask. He tried to be respectful but no one else needs to be put in jeopardy for what he is asking for. So maybe a kind thanks but no thanks would do just fine or maybe even a ...hey you might need to check out a few laws. However this racial BS and hunting permit crap burns me up. The truth of the matter is the Federal Government has signed over 450 treaties with the American Indian and to date has not honored ONE. If you would like to whine about our hunting permits and seasons etc. Make your congressman honor ONE damn treaty then you have the right to complain. Until then how about you get back on the boat that brought your ancestors here and head the hell back to that FREE country they ran away from OH SO LONG AGO. On top of that we as American Indians have the HIGHEST award rate per capita in the MILITARY of ANY other race of people for defending this country. So all of you who want to scream about hunting permits and the such. Just remember who put their ass on the line so you can whine about your freedoms. How about the Code talkers? I myself am a Veteran of the US ARMY as well as my wife. We believe strongly that this country needs to be defended so people like Chief Runamuck have the right to run that sewer he calls a mouth and say what he wants. However I am sick and tired of people who have not ONE DAMN clue about who we are as Indian people and what we have done and provided to this country crying about petty crap. Pick up a damn book and read exactly what we have done and turn off the TV. Hollywood is not the History channel. It disgusts me that generation after generation of Indian people died in horrific ways to insure that this country stay free and jackasses want to make light of that. Not one Indian has ever told a 9-11 joke however my people died in the millions not thousands and in worse ways than you can ever imagine but somehow it's ok to joke about the slaughter of my people? I have frequented this web site for about a year now and have made a few friends here but I can honestly say that after today I will no longer come here. I just cannot believe that in 2003 there are people still wasting my oxygen that think the way so many people here do. This is not the first time I have seen this crap in here and it won't be the last. To all of you who didn't deserve this I apologize now. To those of you who this is directed at....and you know who you are ......SHAME on you. The only comfort I have in leaving here is to know that the idiots out there who said what they did have to wake up each morning and stare themselves in the face. I am leaving my email address on here as I am not afraid to hide who I am so do your best ....send me every damn virus you want and that's ok but I refuse to hide behind the Internet and be chickcrap.
-Best regards,
-Daniel Redelk
Dan,
I'm respectful of your ceremonies, however a Native American performed an assembly program at the school here in NY where I taught, and he was noticed by a wildlife rehabilitator to be wearing eagle feathers. She "squealed" (no pun intended) to the authorities, and the dancer got 6 months and a hefty fine. Piper
hmmmm I noticed you didn't say a damn word about hunting techniques ...the shotgun for example? Do you really think that natives should be able to gun spring waterfowl with these? Or it is ok because 'they are natives'. Im sorry that your feelings are hurt but , I'm really interested to hear what people think about this spring waterfowl hunt. I know natives didn't have airboats and 12 gauges back in the traditional days so someone should explain this to me?
in regards to your question does it matter what they use during the hunt? Isn't what you are trying to say is I'm mad because i'm not a native and can't go out and hunt when they do. We used bows and spears and the wonderful great whiteman who loves to hunt slaughtered buffalo with the gun. maybe lets ask the question how many water fowl have you got in your freezer what do you do with the birds/animals you kill during hunting season? maybe as we feed our people( children /elders) we are hunting to survive we don't collect welfare and wear air jordans, eat pigs feet or anything else most people including whitetrash america does to have a goo ole time. come on bobby lets get a case and shoot up some fowl.. well enough good luck on your quest maybe you will get lucky on your next hunt and shoot your toe off not your foot.HAHAHAAHA
