looking for some to stuff a hawk

Submitted by K. Hutchinson on 02/26/2003. ( stkellen@dcne.net ) 192.138.214.103

I recently found a beautiful, completely intact hawk in my backyard, and would like to have it stuffed, but I'm having trouble finding a taxidermist. Currently the hawk is carefully wrapped and resting in my freezer.

I am in the Boston area, but willing to travel a little. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

How does Federal Prison sound?

Possession of raptors is illegal under heavy penalty of law. Dump the bird and forget about it.

Illegal to mount, unless......

That bird and any of its parts (feathers, etc.) is illegal to possess or have mounted. It is federally protected. There are only a couple of ways to be able to have it mounted I know of. *Sometimes* you can get them mounted if it is for an educational institution (school, etc.), but you still have to get the proper permits from US Fish & Wildlife. I believe there are also ways American Indians can possess such birds (perhaps for ceremonial purposes?), but don't know the particulars on that. Again, contact the USFW.

Take it to a conservation officer and tell them you just found it,and was wondering about the likelyhood of having it mounted all they can do is take it away or at least that is all they should do..they shoulnèt do anything else has you just found it eh..!

Aren't some types of raptors legal to possess? Just a question. I thought I have read something in the past on this topic.

Did it ever occurr to you as to WHY you were having trouble finding a taxidermist?

I thank you all for your lovely and kind answers, I must say you have really given me a great impression of taxidermists and related ilk.

Thank you sincerely to Vicki for taking the time to answer my question.

nice try

You can act as though you are above the type of sarcasm we displayed (but youre obviously not...) , but to no avail. We have seen it all. Theres no way a person can have this much info in front of them and still ask a question that stupid, sorry. You already said you had trouble finding someone to do the work. Take the hint. This isnt reflective of taxidermists, just of people with little patience for games like this.
