Legal or illegal.....that is the question

Submitted by Bird Man on 03/22/2003. ( ) 68.12.125.209

Okay, get this. In the state I live in, prostitution is illegal. Yes, supposed to be, anyway. yet, there are literally HUNDREDS of them in active service just in the big Metroplex alone. They even ADVERTISE their service. Not in some underground smut paper, but in the YELLOW PAGES! How do they get away with it? Why, they're not "prostitures;" they are "ESCORTS."
So what does all this have to do with taxidermy? Nothing so much, other than we bird people have just found a legal loophole. We aren't avian taxidermists. We're wildlife artists. We don't mount raptors and songbirds; we PRESERVE WILDLIFE.
Okay, let's stand up for our rights under euphamistic license!

Those prostitutes have less chance of going to jail for what they do, than you do if you mount the wrong bird. Food for thought.

Take a good look at the logic behind the USFW and the US Dept of The Interior. First, they have enforcement, but none of the officers who enforce could tell you one bird from another unless it was BLATANTLY obvious ! Then they protect birds in the USA that do not really naturally occur here; i.e. steller's eiders, spectacled eider's, etc.,...like the ocelot and a few other animals that fall into the Rio Grande river here in Texas, but don't really occur here naturally - meaning that it is the absolute limits of their range, but let's protect them from everyone because we're(USFW) too stupid to figure out a better way. Seems National geographic took arial photos of specs, 300,000-500,000 of them, sitting on an ice flow in the middle of nowhere BECAUSE THAT IS THEIR TRUE RANGE AND HABITAT - not downtown USA ! Someday, we should all get together and take this fight to the Federal Courts, but then they have a unlimited supply of our money to fight us with. Still USA is the best country on earth !

Look at the big picture

First for Tony;

Please give me an example of someone going to jail for mounting the wrong bird. You can't. What you may be able to do is give an example of someone who has gone to jail for very blatant violations.

Slim;

Where to begin with you? USFWS has a tremendous job to do. Just because they can not identify every bird in the world at a glance is no reason to belittle the task they have agreed to take on. Second, widlife enforcement is not just about protecting what occurs within our boundries. Wildlife needs to be protected everywhere. Many countries do not have the resources or manpower to enforce their own laws and so they look to the U.S. for assistance. This is not only true for wildlife but 1000's of other issues as well. Just because the ocelot is found in small numbers in the U.S. we should not protect it? You have a very narrow view of the world my friend. Or could it be you have been cited by the FWS for something? We may never know as you are a big talker behind your monitor but yet still afraid to leave an email address.

I have a friend that spent 48 hours in a jail in Anchorage for not tagging legally taken birds. His whole life was upended. So you go ahead and do what you want

If they show me their beaver I'll show them my bird.When mounting their beaver I try to use my real bird head unless they prefer I use a fake rubber one. I like to use the real head because it's easier to use correctly than a rubber or plastic one.
