Tumbling mixes

Van Dyke's recommends corn cob dust, but I used to use white corn meal. Can corn meal be substituted in a tumbling mix, rather than pay shipping on cob dust? Also, can hardwood sawdust be a substitute for the oak stuff Van Dyke's also sells?

Meal will sour, spoil and rot on you

Use corncob grit (flour) or hardwood. I like corncob better as it has no splinters to stick into the feather barbs.

Cob dust only?

Are you saying that if I just use cob dust only and not the wood stuff, I should be okay?

Corn cob grit will mold.

I have had corn cob grit mold. I use kiln dried hardwood sawdust, it works very well never molds. It also is courser than wood flour and cleans up very easy from birds and hides.
