starling's are a world wide song bird, and if you shoot one
you'll be singing in "JAIL" so please don't listen to no one but your self,or you can even call
your local d.n.r.& 1-800-wild-life.
Patrick, I don't know about New York but in Oregon they are very much LEGAL. You should check with your local wildlife officer for the regulations in your area.
Patrick;
Starlings are considered a pest in a lot of states. Here in Michigan they can be shot year around. Which also includes opossum, porcupine, Weasel, Red Squirrel, Skunk, feral pigeons English Sparrows Ground Squirrels, and woodchuck. As long as you have a valid hunting license. But check with your hunting regs. in New York and make sure. I hope this helps you out.

Here in Wisconsin, and most other places I believe, starlings are considered an exotic and can be shot any time of the year with no limit. They are natives of Europe, not North America.
I'd check on it to verify their status but I'm pretty sure they're okay to shoot.
Starlings are among several non-native birds and are legal to shoot almost everywhere.
These birds all came from Europe and the UK during the 1800's or earlier, as with the pigeons. None are protected. Can be hunted or outrightly eradicated in mass, and without any need for permit or license. These are not only pests of urban dwellings and buildings, but [pigeons and starlings] are a direct threat to human health. Their droppings can harbor the fungi that cause histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis.
All 2 species are also classified as agricultural pests. Farmers and feedlot operators can even purchase special avicides to destroy starlings and pigeons by the flock. The only permit required may be a pesticide application license, but not a hunting license.
While tolerable in small flocks, the starling, a cavity-nester, is always a threat to more desirable, native species such as eastern blue birds, purple martins, tree swallows and woodpeckers. it is largely because of the starling, that the eastern blue bird was either endangered or about to be.
Now is the time of year to collect a starling to mount. They are in summer plumage and the males perch in prominant spots to sing and strut. A well-aimed BB or pellet gun will bring it down without much damage.
I dont think Starlings are protected in any state. They are not song birds, just looked in the regs. Not listed.
Occifer Jim and Nate need to call tie number Jim listed. Plus Jim needs to read the regs again and do a report on them.
....that starlings can talk. I rescued one - i know - it was a mistake, but it started talking after I had it for about three months. Just aword here and there. Then I started trying to teach it to talk. Now I can't shut it up ! Like a small myna bird.
I know for a fact, that if your out in the state of Michigan. And your shooting starlings, either with a shotgun, slingshot or pellet gun, BB gun,or what ever. And you're not on your own property. You better have a hunting license with you. It's also illegal to fire a firearm within any city limits. Or to shoot any kind of bird in Detroit or any of it's suburbs. Like I said check with your regs.

Hes wrong. You can shoot starlings. Trust me! Well, trust all of us, I guess...lol.
Coyote, get real. Nobody can shoot any kind of gun anywhere in city limits, period. Doesn't have to be about birds. The issue is discharge of a gun.
About shooting and hunting licenses? I can't say for all states. i do know that where starlings and pest birds are actually problematic and require attempted eradication, is on the owner's own property! Duh?
Yes, starlings can talk and...quite well. They also make very good bird pets! They are larger, more rugged than parakeets [budgerigars]and are quite intelligent. Like a little mynah? Yes, indeed! Mynahs ARE starlings! Asian starlings! Starlings are the best mimics of any North American bird.
As I said, in mass, starlings are a problem. Just a few are not bad, and quite enjoyable. I will be robbing a nest this spring for my pet. I want a 3-4 day old chick to hand-feed and imprint. I said a pet, not a specimen. Imprinting is not cruel or unnatural.
Anyone else here who loves small birds and wants a starling, can ask about care of a chick here. I'll be glad to share the knowledge.
I was pretty sure.Have called DNR on this before I posted.but as allways ya get a different anwser every time ya call. How the heck are we supposed to know the laws if they don't?I have had this problem before with other questions and them. Thanks for all the input.

The three biggest threats to bluebirds were english sparrows, pesticides and clearing hedgerows and orchards that had old trees with cavities in them. Now that folks have bluebird programs they have done very well and are far from threatened. Starlings were never much competition as they are larger and bluebirds can nest in smaller cavities.
Look at the laws. The starling and the common sparrow are the only two wild birds (and i stress the word wild) in north America that are not protected in some way. Remember that pigeons are not consiered wild, they are ferrel. The thing is that individual states do reserve the right to protect any bird or ctritter even it the federal government doesnt. So the fact is you need to check with state authorites.
Starlings and Sparrows are not protected birds...not native of US. Set out bread with a piece in a Mouse Trap...catch as many as you want with no gun shooting or holes to sew up later.
If you catch an Eagle by mistake...you're on your own.

I'm looking for about 10 large natural black feathers, from something other than a turkey but realize that ravens and crows are illegal... so does anyone happen to know where I could find some starling feathers. :) Please help.
