I was wondering if you could salt a bird skin for later use like a deer cape?

Just dont let them dry out like deer hides. Put them into a freezer as soon as you return home.

Salted Bird skins

John;
Yes, you can salt bird skins. But I wouldn't put a salted skin in the freezer. African bird skins come back dry salted. You'll need to get a good relaxer like Ultra-Soft relaxer to rehydrate the skin. I personally wouldn't put a salted skin in the freezer. The salt won't allow the skin to freeze, and you'll have a good chance of losing the skin.

Use Borax

You need to apply borax has you skin to absorb boby juices or you won't have a bird skin to mount...has they will very easily become soiled during skinning process.If the borax gets rubbed In good to all areas that should be skinned out...you could let It dry & mount later.I would recommend this route.Then when your ready to mount you can take some borax solution & gradually soften things up for the mounting process?

With either one ...

Whether borax or salt, if you try to use it on a very fatty skin like a waterfowl (or any other bird which happens to be extra fat) and you don't remove the fat first, you still may lose the skin.

Best Results

The best results that I have had were with salted skins that were NOT allowed to dry out. Salt them and keep them very wet, in the freezer works. Dried out they never seem to get the same workability back. Just my experience.
