Ideas for Mounting Old Squaw

Submitted by john on 01/22/2004. ( ) 207.65.241.128

I had the wonderful opportunity to harvest an Old Squaw in Southern Middle TN. Don't know what in the world it was doing down this far, but luckily being a taxidermist, and a duck hunter, I knew to shoot first, then tell the rest a duck was coming in. :)

Since we don't get too many of these down here, can anyone help with ideas for poses, etc. Any special problems to look for when skinning/mounting? Just about all of the pics I have been able to find have been in open water without much detail. So if anyone has good reference they would like to share or trade I would appreicate it.

Thanks,
John

I would mount the duck in a standing position. Oldies are divers and they just look goofy flying, but I've seen good flying mounts of this duck also. Reference is going to be difficult on a standing oldie. It will basically mount up like any otther large diver. The form that ferebee sells is almost always too large. The side pockets on this duck will give you the most problems. I always go down a size in the form I use. An oldie is 8" x 10 1/4 so I use a wood duck form and jst move the leg attachment back like a diver. This eliminates the side pocket problem. Some people like to cut the skin under the wing which allows you more slack to move the side pockets, butI don't like to cut the skin ever if I don't have to. Hope this helps

the fact it will stink more than most other waterfowl, there is no difference between a longtail and anything else.
i have tons of reference for longtails, both standing and flying. all of it came from the internet.
Longtails make very pleasing mounts whether flying, standing, or swimming.
