Hello all,
I just finished a chukar, he turned out well except that his tail was really beat up from being in the pen, I have several more to do and was wondering if it is possible to pluck feathers from other areas of the bird and bondo them in with the tail to make it look better? Has anyone ever tryed this or have any other suggestions about what to do with a bird with a really beat up/barely there tail?
Thanks

How about getting a new tail and bondo that into a slot in the bird body, only an idea , I have never done this. Good luck
to do before the bird is mounted, but yes it is completely possible.
You have two choices, you can either remove the entire tail and replace it with a better one, or Pluck the damamged feathers and replace them with undamaged ones.
Full tail replacement is usally quicker, but either way works fine. When you pluck the single feathers, you may need to take a poker tool and feel down inside the feather folicle to make sure that there is room for the replacement feather to slide into. Then just dab some superglue on the end of the replacement and slide it right in the same folicle the damaged one came out of.
It helps if you use the same feather from the replacement bird as the feather you plucked, but I have made others work.

Thanks, I think I will give this a try and if anyone has any other ideas..I'm open to them..
I always remove the tail and bondo into position, like I said, I have about 10 more chukars to do, but none of the tails look great and each mount will obviously need a tail..I don't want to discard a whole bird just to have a good tail to put on another bird..they will be ok on the standing mounts were the tail is not fanned but otherwise they look bad..
Thanks again
