Submitted by Tony on 01/25/2004. ( info@waterfowl-works.com ) 24.210.211.70

Can anyone hlep me out took my first drake widgeon this season and His tail feathers took a beating when he hit the ice. I have been told I can replace the whole tail section like they do a pheasant? Im am new to this but was wondering if anyone had a good set of tail feathers for sale or that wasnt going to be used I could take off your hands for my mount. I plan to mount a pair. I have only done one bird so far and intend to do a couple others before starting on the prized widgeon mounts. I did a snow goose and it turned fairly well for my first mount. I plan to do a mallard and black duck next. then a couple more geese then hopefully THe widgen but I need a new set of tail feathers.

Water fowl works? and you dont know its illegal to buy, barter, sell or trade waterfowl parts?

Well thats what you ask for.

Maybe you better look up the regs before you go any farther.

sorry

I am in the waterfowlhunting business. Im not trying to buy or sell waterfowl. just looking for some tail feathers. I was not aware it was illegal to buy some feathers from a bird. Sorry about that if it is. disregard. I will just buy another bird from a licensed seller and that will solve the problem.

Freeze it

You cannot buy, trade or sell migratory birds or parts. If the tail feathers are shot, freeze the bird until you you get anothet one and to can change the parts depending on what gets damaged on the next one.

Wait for a better one.

I think what Tony is saying in his last post is he will buy from an aviary, which is legal provided it is acompanied by all the papers.

Tony, If your going to buy the bird from the licensed aviary you may as well mount that one (consider it a replica of the one you harvested). As im sure you already know they are spendy. Personally I would freeze it and wait for another one. Who knows, maybe the next one will be all around better. Just my opinion. I look at it this way...Im a hunter, Im a taxidermist, I have already harvested every species of waterfowl that migrate through my area. I only mount for myself the best birds I get because I have never thought that when I harvest a specific species that it will be my last. Mounting your first bird of a species is pretty special for a while. That pretty much ends about the time you shoot a better one.
