There's as many disagreements on this as there is on the right fleshing machine. Dawn will work well. So will any SOAP or detergent listed as having the ability to break down oils. The professional soaps (Epo-Grip Bloodout/Degreaser and Van Dyke's Eliminator) are especially good, though some bird experts don't like them particularly. Then there's the SOLVENTS that simply break down the oils, but do not remove them. You'll have to decide on this one.
I prefer Super Solvent, just seems to work better for me.
make your soap 50%dawn 50%tide colddddd water!
I just watched a duck mounting video with stephan savides. he says to use any soap I think he was using crystal clear dish washing soap. he says to use a lot of soap and warm water because the soap was designed to work in warm water, also rinse in warm water and I believed he rinsed the duck 7 different times. then he put it in white gas for just a couple minutes he said it helps get the water out of the feathers doesn't really take any grease out, then tumbled in corn cob grit. I think everybody has there own way of doing it what ever works best for them.
Ill stick with dawn antibacterial and a little oxy clean..I use the spray nozzle to rinse..Instead of any petroleum products for removeing water ..I roll my hand on the skin down ward against a drain table then put the skin flat in a towel this takes most of the water out and then tumble..With the 6hp shop vac on blow it dotn tkae long to fluff that ducky right out..Ive seen what happened with some of those fancy degreasers if you do something wrong..No thanks..This work just fine and with little danger....
Only my .02's worth
I like Dawn and I use cold water only..if the bird has pin feathers, make it a quick wash, they are even more prone to fall out in the wash...
but.. I'm just a beginner too... :)
If I might add some additional information. Here's an important tip.... double check that your shop-vac is in the exhaust mode and NEVER turn it on while pointing it toward your bird.
Man-o-man, does that 6 hp have some power in that intake. I'll never make that mistake again!
