Rock Doves (Pigeons)

Submitted by Becky on 01/29/2004. ( taklip@hotmail.com ) 68.52.172.104

Question for ya'll......I live in Maryland, and I recently spoke with my state DNR representative. I wanted to know if it is legal to mount rock doves--you know, Pigeons! I understand that they were brought to America like starlings and house sparrows, so they shouldn't be protected, right? Well, the lady I spoke to was new, and she said that the state is debating this, but she thinks that it is now illegal to mount pigeons without paperwork and stuff. Does anybody else know about this issue, because the lady I spoke with did not help with my question at all! Thanks for reading this mess*

I don't know about Maryland, but here on the Left Coast They are not protected in any way. No closed season, no limit, and no licence required.

mount all you want. I'm in Maryland too and called my good fiend who works for DNR and asked him about your concern. He's a biologist for them and checked with others about the feral pigeons, and there is no law protecting them. No paperwork necessary. My guess is that the person you spoke with got pigeons mixed up with mourning doves, which are a game bird in Maryland, but being a migratory bird, fall under the federal regulations. Have fun!

The problem is, your calling them rock doves,
If you asked about barn Pigeons you'd get an answer.

Thanks

Thanks for clearing this up. The lady I spoke to was new on the job I think, so she was probably still learning the rules. Pigeons are beautiful birds, and no matter what anybody else says, I love 'em!
