Hello all , young and old out their in the wonderful world of waterfowl taxidermy.I am just starting out in the world of waterfowl preservation.I am actually just starting to preserve hides. My question is pretty basic. Since the price of feathers has gotten outrageous, and my other passion is fly tying, I've decided to take matters into my own hands. And preserve capes off birds I've harvested. What do I need to do to get a pristine preserved cape without any odors.I have heard borax, which I use but is their anymore to it after that. Thanks for your help in this matter.

it's easier than you think?

I too preserve my own bird skins for fly-tying, and taxidermy too. It's easy to do. All yo do is coat that thing with lots of borax, salt, or any other preservative. Leave it in a dry place for 3-7 days, brush the preservative off, then your ready to go! You'll know it's done when it's stiff and dry.

Alcohol?

someone correct me if im wrong, but wouldn't a little bath in alcohol, followed by a rinse in clean water do well for removing grease, killing bacteria, etc?
