building a tumbler

Submitted by trc on 02/14/2004. ( ) 207.230.203.27

I built a tumbler, it is a 55 gal brum, 27 rpm motor. my problem is
when I tumble the birds they do not dry. I use a commercial sawdust. How much sawdust should be inside to work properly?
Is there texture in side of commercial barrels? or could it be my proces of how I do my birds? I wash in dawn, then wash with laundry soap, then a rince with water, lastly in minral sperets for about a half hour, and then tumble? Thanks for the help.Yes, I have picked this hobby up on my own, and my spelling sucks. TRC

You didnt say if you had baffles installed in your tumbler to break up the material. Without them it will just stay together in a large mass and not do a bit of good. I too built my tumbler i used oak for the baffles, 1x6 workout pretty good. hope this helped.

To decrease the chances of damaging feathers, the barrel should be at least half filled with tumbling medium.

Thank you

Thanks I did not have baffles. how many did you use, and do they run
the length of the barrel? so kind of like a dryer? Thanks for the info. TRC
