Actually his tail feathers were always brown

The green feathers are actually on the lower back and are extremely long covert feathers, well sort-of anyway. Without seeing your bird, all I can figure is that the long green feathers fell out or were removed, and what you have left are only the tail feathers showing. The green color is not a pigment, so it didn't fade since it is structural in nature. The only other thing I could imagine is if someone came with spray paint and covered your green with brown.

I know what you mean

My peacocks tail eye feathers were green on the 'fringes'and i had noticed the same thing lately - in that they appear brown. i have photos of it when just finished and they were green.
He doesnt sit in direct sunlight.
No feathers have fallen out.
But as to why - well, i am as much in the dark about it as you.

Light angle

They change from green to bronze (brownish) depending on which angle the light is coming from. I also suspect that the amount of humidity in the air my affect them temporarily. (Just my personal theory)
I think they would still look green if the light hit them just right.

Ask Stefan Savides

He's the bird expert. His website is: http://www.aviandesign.com/

I'm sure he'll be more than happy to help. If he doesn't know the answer, he probably knows someone who will.

Hope this helps!

Your English is much better than my German! =)

Has the peacock been exposed to sunlight?

This response submitted by Nancy M. on 02/22/2004 at 10:25. ( ) 67.27.40.14

I did not realize how old it was.
It might be damaged by light. If so, there is not much that can be done to help it. The effect is like getting tarnish on copper, although that is not what is really happening.
Another possibility is that it may need cleaning, but with it being 17 years old that could be very risky.
You could try very gently washing one feather in warm water (with soap) to see if it helps. Rinse the feather very well and then dry it with a hairdryer. If it turns green again then you will know that the peacock needs cleaning. Try to find a taxidermist to do it for you, because cleaning the entire tail will be a huge job.
If it stays brown then the peacock is probably damaged by light or smoke residue and nothing will help it.

ok thanks
