the feathers on the back of the turkey's neck how do i get them to look as good as the rest of the feathes? i wire wheel this area first then roll it back into the neck & pin while i do rest of the bird. then i wash in dawn 2-3 times till water is clean & not "milky".let drip dry a while then into some pain thinner for about 20-30 mins.let that air dry some then will refreze till ready to mount. then put bird in a box of corn cobb grit overnight , then use shop vac. & hair dryer to finnish getting it all dry. but these feathers still dont look as god as the others. yes i know some is from beening shot in the neck .i thy & keep it covered while i work on rest of the bird.what do i need to do ?
thx. Tim

You may need to specificlly wash the neck. I dont know why you roll it inside and pin it.

Just sounds like you are adding to the grease problem.

Are you washing well? Even though you think you have washed the skin, you may just be hitting the first few feathers. Work the soap down into the feathers. Then rinse, rinse, rinse. You may also be leaving soap in the feathers.

It may be blood

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have an extremely difficult time seeing bloodstains on turkey feathers. On any part of the turkey which is even remotely near a shot hole I assume there is blood in the feathers and wash it very aggressively - putting full-strength Dawn on the area and scrubbing it vigorously with a soft toothbrush. The feathers will regain their shape in the rinse.

Leaving a turkey skin in cob grit overnight makes no sense. If you don't have a tumbler just fluff the turkey with some grit, a la "Shake-n-Bake" and then blow dry. You can refrigerate it overnight and mount it the next day, but leaving it out overnight at room temperature without preservative is asking for trouble eventually.
