Lethal Injection

Submitted by Griz on 03/19/2004 at 13:52. ( ) 69.66.87.139

What can i use to inject into a coon to kill it humanely. I posted this in birds cause i was also going to do it with some pen raised phesants this summer. How else do you ladies and gents kill a bird (or mammal for that matter) with out doing any damage to it? I know you can step on the heart or compress a birds chest but they don't always flop on their back and let you do this.

injection

Griz,
i dont know about the coon. but if you have somebody hold the bird for you, you can take a syringe and inject water onto the brain and that will take care of them fairly quick. and there is really no damage at all to the feathers.

If your use one hand and pinch the bird under the arm pitts (yes I know they don't have arms but......), with the head toward the ground in seconds the head will go limp. In a few more seconds you will feel a little flutter..........all done. Damm that can be viewed many different ways ......):

You bird people need to check the archives

Your methods aren't that great. Try Stefan Savides electrocution method and the birds die instantly without ever fluttering a wing. As for your coon, Griz, probably a .22 bullet to the back of the head is the easiest. The injections that are lethal are strictly controlled substances and usually not worth the hassle required to get authorization.

the guy said he wants to do it without doing any damage to the animal! I don't think shooting it is going to be good! GEESH!

raised them for years and worked great! Just coudn't use that ax on a live one. Have also raised many coons and just couldn't kill one.

Thank you

I found Stefan's post. I see this has been covered a couple of times. Electrocution is very ingenious. Just like the ol electric chair. I see JohnC just injects air in the brain, doesn't even bother with water.
At first i thought i could just feed the coon some GoldenMalrin, like we use to poison coons in the sweet corn patch. They die right at the pan. But they lose their appetite after they have been caught.

Do it and you a favor

Shoot it! They have long fur and a 22 will not do much skin damage. DOn't inject it with anything unless you are a doctor or a Vet!

Squeeze method

The squezzing the breast under the wings works the best .When you feel the heart beat put pressure on it and in know time the bird will go to sleep. Verry humane and with no damage at all to the bird

we had to dispatch a coon not long ago and we gassed it. We used the cage it was trapped in, covered it with a plastic tarp, ran a hose from the truck exhaust to an opening at one end of the tarp and secured it. We just ran the truck for about 7 minutes (probably didn't need to run it that long but we wanted to make sure it didn't come to while we were handling it). After this, we took measurements, put it in an airtight bag and stuck it in the freezer for later. I learned from my son that his father-in-law has been dispatching coons and possums this way for over 8 years out on his farm.

That question has been answered literally hundreds of times, heck JohnC has probaly answered it dozens of times himself, so to find the answer to that question go to the orange search button on the left hand column of the screen and search for whatever you are wondering about and it will produce thousands of responses.

griz recognize this ,,,well you wrote it

Stephan's electrocution sounded like the fastest most humane way to me. I talked with him about it a couple weeks ago and he explained to me he has tried them all and this is by far the most humane way. He takes a lamp cord and seperates the two wires and then attaches alligator clips to each side. He then attaches one clip to the tongue and the other to the vent and plugs it in for just a moment. It kills the bird quickly and you can still eat the meat.

I disagree. I tryed that very same method, I attached the one clip to my tongue & one to the vent. You wont believe this, but it shocked the bejesus out of me. I wont be using this method again. I could of been killed.

ouch that hurt wilson LOL

But i probaly deserved it. In one of my old fur-fish-game magazines Tom miranda recommended a chemical to inject skunks with to kill them without them spraying. He said it relaxed them and then put them out quickly. I was hoping to get the name of that chemical. I couldn't find it in the archives. I hate drowning them, i don't know why but i always figured when i die- drowning is the last way i want to go. I like swimming and stuff but i hate the thought of drowning, and i kinda hate doing it to critters for that reason. And i didn't want to just start shooting it up full of acetone or alcohol. I was surfing the bird forum so i just posted it in here versus the mammal category and the subject quickly became emphasized on birds- which is good, i didn't know about the electrocution method.

Sparky, you're full of crap

This response submitted by George on 03/19/2004 at 21:36. ( ) 205.188.116.144

I've killed dozens of birds since Stefan first posted that method and it's practically impossible to get shocked any more than plugging a lamp into the wall is. Now if you were standing barefoot in a pile of cow crap and the wires were frayed, MAYBE, but electricity takes the path of least resistance to ground. Since these alligator clips are seldom over 10 inches apart through wet flesh and you're holding insulating feathers, what you described is just a wuss talking. It IS the most humane way I've ever found and certainly more humane than finding its heart and squeezing the life out of it.

As for the coon, the .22 is still the best way of dispatching a FURRED animal. You aren't using a .357 on it and the tiny hole can be patched very easily. And it's more humane than hooking up your exhaust pipe or putting it in a bag with a rock and drowning.

Shooting the coon is by far the most convenient. But don't shoot the head. shoot it in the chest instead. there will be less blood on the fur. and shinning is a bit more pleasant

hey GEO

George,
Sometimes ya got to have a sense of humor, ya know. When I was reading the post w/ the explanation of the electrocution method It concerned me that someone could take it to the extreme & get hurt. As you very well know, not everyone here has a complete understanding of all the terms & lingo used on this site. I just thought it would be better received if I used Humor rather than saying it direct. LOL.

acetone for skunks

This response submitted by Michelle B on 03/20/2004 at 07:17. ( laurelmt@lhtc.net ) 65.167.183.42

Griz, a trapper that works for the game comm. said he uses acetone in a 3cc suringe on the end of a pole for skunks and injects in the lungs. he said it's only seconds, it doesn't suffer or spray.
Then he can collect the scent in a bottle to sell after he skins it.

The only catch to that was though, you have to baby talk or sing to the skunk so it don't get startled & spray til you get close enough with the pole. He said he knows if anyone was standing back in the woods watching him walk up to the skunk singing, they'd think he lost his mind. But he catches alot of them and sells alot of scent.

Just 1 ?

So is the pheasant just standing still for you while hooking clips on it's wings and tongue?

Thx michelle

This response submitted by Griz on 03/20/2004 at 10:37. ( ) 69.66.85.58

I guess i might just shoot it with a .22, but i was thinking acetone would work. I didn't know it only took 3cc's though. Thx again

Knock it out

This response submitted by Big Dog on 03/20/2004 at 22:10. ( ) 207.177.56.64

you could just hit it over the head with a metal bar or a hammer then put a bag over the coons head then put a rubberband around the coons neck to hold the bag. You have to hit them pretty hard to knock them out.

lighter fluid

This response submitted by Sal on 03/21/2004 at 09:26. ( ) 65.129.180.56

I read a trapping article about dispatching mammals and they said to inject them with lighter fluid. I squeezed a crow yesterday took about 30 sec. I make some box traps with a flex hose so I can back the truck up to it and hook it up to my exhaust. I just bought a deisel and I know the exhaust on a cold winters morning can just about kill me so I cant wait till next fall to try it on my boxes. I karate chop fish at the head junction and they die almost instantly. I tryed to compress a fisher last fall but after some time I found a .22 works the best. I think we should send this whole discuusion to the PETA web page It will kill any die hard animal rights activist quicker than any of the methods mentioned here and the one's it doesn't kill I just bought a new deisel if anyone has big enough boxes.
Happy Dispatching
