Rubber Band on duck wings

Submitted by Cripple Creek on 03/26/2004 at 09:14. ( cripplecreek@pintailmail.com ) 208.34.251.231

My question is with the rubber band on the wings. I have heard of some people removing this but others use it to get the skin positioned on the wings. The people who remove it say it will mess up your wing position once it dries. Is this true?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

I've been mounting birds now for a good 22 years and I'm extremely sorry to say, but I haven't the foggiest idea what it is you are talking about...

Rubber Bands/Wings.... was there a post somewhere I missed that has mentioned this?

Are you talking about the flight web tendon..? That runs along the leading edge of the wing and helps to form the flight web when in flight? If so... then yes I do remove this tendon... as yes there is the potention of it shriviling up as it dries and pulling feathers out of place.

Jon

Wrong Terminology

This response submitted by Cripple Creek on 03/26/2004 at 14:51. ( ) 208.34.251.231

I was referring to the flight web tendon. When I was taught, my instructor called it the rubber band. I've been taking it out, but I sometimes pull a few small feathers out with it. I hope this clarifies it for all of the Me' up there.

Thanks, Tony, for trying to figure out what I was asking.

Howdy Cripple Creek

I hope you didn't take offense to what I, or any others said this morning.. Please keep in mind, that although I've been doing avian taxidermy for 22 yrs, doesn't mean that there is terminology and or procedures that I do not know. Whether it be I learned a different way, or that there are more standard procedures to date. Just because I hadn't heard of "rubber Band," terminology doesn't mean it doesn't or never existed. I think the same goes with everyone who answered, Not speaking for them, but I don't think any of us meant to make you feel miserable for the question you asked...

All that aside, like I answered earlier, Yes I do remove the flight tendon....Sometimes it can be pulled out simply with borax on your fingers and a soft controlled tug... however, it comes out much much easier if you take a sharpe blade and score the top of it.. Generally I do not have any feathers pull out if I do this.

Good Luck!

Jon

Just so

you have qnother opinion, I do not remove the flight tendon. For me, it is much easier and creates a smoother flight edge when pulled forward and pinned to leave it in. I have not had a problem with feather drumming, however, I carefully tape the wing edges just the way I want them. The flight tendon also seems to be a stronger attachment than the skin without it. Like most things in Taxidermy, there are always more than one wasy to do things. good luck

Jon is right

I don't think any of us meant to be rude. I know I certainly didn't. I honestly had no idea what you were referring to. But, I'll never forget it when I mount birds in the future. A rubber band is a good description of it. =)

new way
