Grease leaking from goose

Submitted by Richard on 04/14/2004 at 14:50. ( ) 66.189.204.226

When checking a drying goose mount I noticed about a 1 inch X 1/4 inch spot of grease on the feathers by the leg. Obviously I didn't get all of the fat off of that particular spot. Any suggestions on what to do about this. I took a cotton ball soaked with asitone to it and it cleaned up nice but it came back 2 days later. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Richard

You mention that the goose is drying. If it is not crispy dry another option is to open the leg mechanically remove the grease, heavily coat with dry preservative and sew shut. Unfortunately, grease does not evaporate on its own. If you have doubts about other areas such as around the tail and the belly incision you may want to do some preventative work there as well. Superficially removing the grease from the feathers after it soaks through has never been effective for me - the grease will continue to appear. Good luck
