I am mounting a Peacock for the first time. I have removed the tail from the body. The train seems to be a large mass of feather butts all in one form and shape. Do I need to separate all of the roots in order to clean between them , or can I inject the whole mass as it is? I got some Balmex thinking I could just inject it, but I'm not sure if it is the right way to do it.
I was able to clean around the tail feathers alright without disattaching them from the train.
Also, if you've seen pictures of the bird in flight, I would like to get some more if I could. I have only one so far.
Thanks.

I would try and separate those quills and get as much of that tissue out of there as possible, you would be amazed at how much fat and meat is still inside between those quills. If you want your tail to be solidly mounted to your bird, you need to get it completely cleaned out and then use caulk between the feather butts. I would recommend removing the tail to work on it properly too.It is going to require some wire and bondo to reattach it to the body right.Hope this helps.Nothin worse than grease leakage later on to ruin a mounts tail!
Thanks for the help Bonnie. I had a feeling that I should try getting them cleaned out. After I posted my question I did go ahead and try it. And I found a system that seemed to work. It is just as you said. There is a lot of fat still in there.
Then I had the same thought about maybe needing a replacement filler. I was thinking of trying hot glue or something, but your idea to use caulking sounds like a great plan. Any certain kind I should use? Just your average latex caulk I suppose, huh?
I am appreciative of you taking the time to answer. I'll probably be posting a few more questions before I'm done, too. If you happen to see any more of my inquiries, feel free to respond. I'll probably be posting new message titles.
Thanks again. Chris
Yes, I use the regular white latex, it has served me well on turkeys and pheasants tails.Ask anything you like, I like to help.
