How do I preserve a songbird?

hello
I live in Philadelphia and found this site because I was looking into trying to preserve this beautiful little electric blue bird I found dead today on the sidewalk outside my studio (I'm an artist by occupation). I think I want to try to preserve it without having to cut it open (I'm not sure if I want to deal with the mess). Is that possible?
Let me know what you think. It's double ziplocked in my freezer right now.

thanks Jenn

Sounds like you may have an indigo bunting, but regardless, it violates both state and federal law to possess such a songbird. Many of us would like to have and keep them and it seems such a waste, but bureaucracies don't see it that way. You could be subject to fines and even the threat of prison for having it in your possession. It CAN be legally held with permits, but unless you are an educational institution or museum, it's highly unlikely. Spare yourself the grief and discard the bird.

In your freezer eh?

Well at least now the authorities know right where to look for the evidence. What I'm gettin at here Jenn is that in North America it is flat out illegal for you to posess a migratory song bird like that in whole OR in part. Return it to where you found it or dispose of it elsewhere.. but you cannot keep it without a special permit. These permits must be in your posession before you acquire the bird and are generally reserved for educational institutions. It kinda sucks we all agree here... but that's the law.

Quick Draw George!

Jenn , before you throw it away , try calling some nature centers in your area to see if they want it . Since your in Phily , you might want to call the Phily academy of natural science of even a school . Its a shame to just throw it out without trying this first . Rick

Except that...

Sounds good in theory but is still illegal Rick. Yup it is a sucky law that results in wasted songbirds.. so get the politicians to change the laws. But don't go breaking them.
