Are goose feathers dirty?

My son found a whole bunch of goose feathers. Are they okay for him to play with?, Do I need to clean them?, If so, how? What could happen if they weren't cleaned?

I know very well that bird feathers are full of mites and generally bad things. I wouldnt give them to your kid to play with. But i'd be really glad if one of you taxidemy-experts could tell me what I should do with some feathers i've collected and would like to clean so i can avoid getting mites/diseases myself. I'm guessing plain old soap won't do the trick. A friend suggested flea powder but i dont know.

(oh yeah and less of the smart-arse comments i've been reading please, i'm no taxidermist I just want information ok?)
