It is only legal to mount, for educational purposes, for schools, library, museums, ect. but, they must obtain, a permit from the Fish and Wildlife office, for possession and taxidermy purposes, and the bird must be kept on their property.
Nobody can tell you the exact legal thing to do, what ever state you are in, call F&S office, I feel they are very fair, in dealing with these matters with you.
But if you try to keep it, get it mounted, for your own possession, then you are looking at serious matters with the law.
