If you are in the United States blue jays are a federally protected species and highly illegal. So it would be a REALLY BAD CHOICE to start with try starting with a pigeon or a starling they are legal to posses.
Good luck
Mike
i didint now that thank you for telling me. ill try to get a starlin or somtin. are robins protected.
You need to start at the very beginning, what I maen by that is you need to read up on the laws and regs, maybe even talk to your local game warden before you even think about getting a specimen. Then order all the Breakthrough manuals and videos you can afford. After you have read the manuals and watched the videos so much you know them by heart, come back here and search the archives with any other questions you may have. Anything left unanswered after all that can be asked and someone will help you. I'm not trying to be a smart aleck but if you were to get caught with a robin or blue jay you would be faced with a very expensive fine as well as possible jail time. Where are you located? I know there are some people that offer classes pretty reasonable on the weekends.

How old are ya? The reason I am asking is as most here I started young age 7.The Ole "JW Elwood" was how I got started.Basic intell and simple tools are needed .I trapped muskrats to get my tools and mom paid for my lessons.....I would be glad to loan ya a extra copy of the lessons but I gave mine to a starter....
There's not a taxi on here that wont help those that are trying ...
A little more intel maybe helpfull?
As for birds to start ..Barn Pigeons and starlings are good to start with and Im sure easy to get.....Its what I used............
I started out at age 12 myself Zach and had no $ either! I got my books at the library for free and they even loaned me some from other libraries. That is one way to get some books to read.I hope you can make some $ soon because you want to use the good materials when doing your pigeon or starling (if you know any hunters, you may even be able to talk them out of a legally killed bird for practice) I did that. But if you ever want to do taxidermy for others, you need to get licensed of course, I did that at 15 (had to have my dad cosign my license) I was the youngest taxidermist in my state at that time back in 1987! I am 34 now and still going strong, if you need any more advice let me know. You will need a little $ to buy your eyes and some borax etc. I mowed a few lawns back in the day to get my eyes!
