What preserves the bird

I just finished watching McKenzie's turkey video with Joe Ferebee.
He dusts the bird with borax while skinning , then he washes the bird in dawn , followed by thinner. He then tumbles and mounts, making no mention of any further preservative. Did I miss something or did the video skip a step? Is this enough to keep the skin from rotting ?
I am about to try my 1st bird and thought I should find out .

Thanks in advance for any help.

'Sounds to me like they missed a step.
Apply plenty of borax to ALL inner surfaces of the skin after drying the feathers and before mounting the bird.
Good thing you questioned that!
