Help with setting Canada Goose Eyes

Submitted by Dana on 07/06/2004 at 18:42. ( FoxTrapper@hotmail.com ) 216.51.213.47

I am currently at the moment trying to set the eyes on my first canada goose, and for some reason when I get one side set, I don't seem to have enough skin to set the other side. Also, the eyelids are way too big and I have alot of extra skin to try and tame down and I cant get him and I can't pin into my cast head so I am having a hell of a time getting him done. Is there any way to tuck the eyes or something? Any help would GREATLY be appreciated. Thanks, Dana

Sounds to me like you're having trouble with the lower eyelid. Ducks "blink" their eyes from the lower eyelid moving it in the up position on the eye. That means they need more eyelid on the bottom. An easy way to deal with this is to use a Dremel or Fordom tool and cut a "half-moon channel" about 1/8 inch deep along the lower rim of the eye socket. This will now allow you to tuck the "extra" skin. As for pinning the eye, next time overgrind the eye socket and fill it with epoxy putty then put the eyes in place. When the putty begins to set it will hold your pins and the eyes where you want them. Good luck....JL

Thanks JL, That is a good tip to know for the next project that I start. I finally got him done, it took me awhile but he turned out nicely. It was for my aunt who has wanted a goose mounted since she was in high school because she likes geese and collects anything with geese on it, so that was pretty cool, she happened to be visiting this weekend so she got to see him and she is very excited. Thanks again, Dana
